Fly-In pro named Manitoba's best

Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club Head Professional Brian Guenther has been named the Manitoba Professional Golfers Association (MPGA) Professional of the Year.

The announcement came at an MPGA annual meeting in Winnipeg last week.

Guenther, 36, has been the head pro in Steinbach the past four years. Guenther says it is quite an honour considering the voting is conducted by his peers, the 120 members of the association. Nominations were submitted to the association and from there three names were selected as finalists.

Prior to taking the head job in Steinbach, the Steinbach native was head professional at Falcon Lake for seven years. He became an assistant professional in 1993 and was assistant pro in Steinbach for several years under Larry Robinson before landing the head job at Falcon.

Guenther also had his best year as a player this year in the MPGA tournaments, winning about $5,000 through the year, finishing fourth overall in the player standings. And that has earned him a trip to Florida in mid-November to compete in the Canadian Club Professional Championships at Port St. Lucie, Florida. Guenther is part of the four-man team representing Manitoba along with Derek Ingram of Elmhurst, Geoff Kehler of St Boniface and Selkirk's Dean North.

Guenther says running a successful golf operation is always a challenge. He notes that in addition to increasing competition in recent years with the construction of new golf courses, the number of golfers in general is in slight decline. In Canada the past five or six years, it's estimated the number of golfers in the country has been declining by a about 1.5% per year.

But Guenther says the Fly-In, with about 25,000 rounds this year is still one of the top golf destinations in the area as they remain competitive with their green fees and benefit from the outstanding condition of the golf course.

Steinbach's Brian Guenther has been named the MPGA Professional of the Year.
